BMW VIN decoder

A BMW VIN tells you more than most owners expect. The first three characters show whether the car came from Germany or from BMW’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and whether it’s a regular model, an M car or one of the i electric models.

Type the full 17 characters into the box and you’ll get the year, model, body style, engine and assembly plant, plus any open recalls and the complaints other owners have filed with NHTSA.

BMW manufacturer codes (WMI)

The first three characters of a BMW VIN are its World Manufacturer Identifier. These are the ones you’re most likely to see on vehicles sold in the United States:

VIN starts withMeaning
WBABMW cars built in Germany
WBSBMW M models
WBYBMW i electric models
5UXBMW X models built in South Carolina
5YMBMW X M models built in South Carolina

Not sure what the rest of the characters mean? Our guide to what each digit in a VIN means walks through all 17, and the VIN year chart shows how to read the model year from the 10th character.

How to read a BMW VIN

The last seven characters matter on a BMW

BMW stamps a shortened version of the VIN, the last seven characters, on parts and uses it on many service records. When a parts counter asks for “the last seven,” this is what they mean. It’s also a handy way to check that a used car’s paperwork matches the car.

Spartanburg or Germany?

If the VIN starts with 5UX or 5YM, the vehicle was built in South Carolina. That’s where BMW builds most of its X models, including many X3, X5 and X7 SUVs. VINs starting with WBA, WBS or WBY came out of German plants.

What a VIN won’t show

Options like paint code, packages and individual factory option codes aren’t part of the public VIN data. A BMW dealer can pull the full build sheet from the VIN, and the paint code is usually printed on a label under the hood or in the door jamb.

Before you buy a used BMW: what to check with the VIN

Once you’ve decoded the VIN, these are the BMW-specific things worth comparing against the listing.

Rear-wheel drive or xDrive?

Many BMW models were sold with both. The Drive type row in the report tells you which one this car has, which matters for winter driving and for price.

M car or M Sport package?

An M Sport package adds bumpers, wheels and badges, but the car is still a regular model. A genuine M car carries the WBS code (or 5YM for X M models). If the VIN starts with WBA and the price is M-car money, ask why.

Ask for service records by the short VIN

BMW dealers record work against the VIN. Ask the seller for a service history printout and check that the last seven characters match the car in front of you.

Where to find the VIN on a BMW

Check the dashboard through the windshield on the driver’s side first, then the label on the driver’s door jamb. The VIN is also printed on the title, registration and insurance card. See all the places to look.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a BMW is an M car from the VIN?

Look at the first three characters. True M models from Germany usually start with WBS, and X M models from South Carolina start with 5YM. M Sport packages on regular BMWs don’t change the VIN code.

Where is the VIN on a BMW?

Look through the windshield at the bottom corner on the driver’s side, or check the label on the driver’s door pillar. It’s also on your registration and title.

Can I see BMW option codes for free?

Not from public VIN data. Our decoder shows the build details NHTSA has on file. For the complete option list, ask a BMW dealer to run the VIN.
